Planning consent agreed for new homes

23 January 2008

The first new homes for a multi-million pound regeneration of one of the most dynamic parts of London have been given the green light.

Southwark Council's planning committee last night (Tuesday 21 January) approved plans for homes at Canada Water in the first phase of the scheme.

The entire scheme being developed by the council, partner British Land Canada Quays (BLCQ) and Barratt Homes  also includes a stunningly-designed library, a civic plaza, leisure facilities, shops and green space.

The decision yesterday re-enforces the council' s commitment to affordable housing, with a third of the 63 homes designated as affordable.

The homes will also be built to high eco-standards and key features include:

  • Ensuring 10 per cent of energy is renewable (that's twice the guidelines)
  • Creating an eco-roof on the building
  • A children's play area within the site
  • Ensuring over half the homes are family sized

Consultation in December last year found that over 90 per cent of local people were in favour of the plans, and rated the plans as either good or very good.

How can I view the plans?
