Development agreement signed

21 January 2008

A major regeneration project to create a new town centre in South London with state of the art community facilities has reached another important milestone.

The council, which works with its development partner British Land Canada Quays (BLCQ), has now agreed a deal for the first phase of the scheme.

Southwark has signed a development agreement with Barratt Homes to build approximately 900 homes, to high eco-standards and quality design centred around a new civic plaza and retail space.

These make up phase one of a masterplan which overall includes 2,800 homes, a library, leisure facilities, offices, retail and new public spaces located around Canada Water.

Councillor Richard Thomas, Executive member for Regeneration said: "This will be an extremely exciting transformation, creating a dynamic new town centre with a landmark library building at its heart. Southwark is at the forefront of innovative regeneration and has some of the most creative housing schemes in the country, focused strongly on sustainable living, high eco-standards and community facilities."

David Taylor, Chairman of BLCQ, added: "We are delighted to welcome Barratt Homes as our partner for the first stage of the project. We are on track to deliver the first of the detailed applications early next year. We will work closely with Barratts to ensure that this major regeneration scheme delivers opportunities and amenities to the local community. The delivery of this existing mixed use scheme has taken a major step forward."

Alastair Baird, Managing Director of Barratt East London and Thames Gateway, said: "We are totally committed to regenerating brownfield sites and using high quality design to deliver new communities across London.  We will be working closely with Southwark Council, BL Canada Quays and the local community in bringing forward a development of the highest quality. Canada Water has the potential to transform Rotherhithe, and Barratt wants to work with local people to make it happen."

Barratt Homes have appointed PKS Architects who will be working closely with BL Canada Quays and Southwark Council to prepare detailed planning applications for the initial stage to provide some 250 mixed tenure new homes. It is expected be considered by Southwark Council's planning committee in early 2008.
